How does physical rehabilitation therapy work?

After our initial consultation to determine if your pet could benefit from Physical Rehabilitation Therapy, we will develop a specialized treatment plan for your unique pet.

Depending on your pet’s needs, our sessions can consist of the following:

Therapeutic Massage – Therapeutic massage therapy facilitates increased circulation, reduced inflammation, prepares the muscles for exercise and improves flexibility and range of motion. This treatment eases muscle and joint pain while reducing your pet’s stress levels.

Class IV Laser Therapy – Also known as photobiomodulation therapy uses a specific wavelength of light to help treat a multitude of conditions from wounds to osteoarthritis to certain neurological conditions, and much more. This wavelength enters the damaged cells to stimulate cellular activity, this helps tissues heal faster, reduces inflammation, and alleviates pain.

Passive Range of Motion – An essential component of our rehabilitation program, this gentle, hands-on treatment improves overall joint mobility and flexibility. By carefully moving the joint through its natural range, we can relieve stress, reduce pain, and enhance the pet’s comfort and quality of life. This technique is particularly beneficial for pets with arthritis, post-surgical patients, and those with limited mobility.

Therapeutic Exercise – Therapeutic exercise aids in improving muscle tone, strength, coordination, and general fitness. We incorporate various equipment such as cavaletti rails, wobble boards, and physioballs to create targeted exercises with the goal of attaining increased range of motion, flexibility, endurance, proprioception, and balance.

Hydrotherapy – Hydrotherapy is an excellent treatment for muscle strengthening, recovery from injury/surgery, weight loss, pain management, and a multitude of neurological conditions. We use an underwater treadmill which creates a combination of buoyancy and resistance effect, allowing the pet to receive safe low-impact exercise with minimal strain on the joints. The hydrostatic pressure of the water also helps with balance and enhances proper coordination and locomotion.

Dry Needling – Dry needling is a type of manual therapy that uses thin needles to target myofascial trigger points. These trigger points are found in the muscles and connective tissues and can develop due to injury, overuse, or improper movement. As a result, muscle spasms and dysfunction of the muscle can occur. When applied to the area of concern, it can release tension, decrease myofascial pain, increase blood flow, and improve mobility. This therapy is paired with massage, stretching, and exercise.
